The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has decided to reward its employees who literally worked day and night to make sure the Common wealth Games were a success. The civic body plans to pay Rs 2,500 to each of its 11,000 'C' and 'D' grade employees. Welcoming the move of the welfare department of the NDMC, Mukesh Bhatt, a member of the council, said they will pass the proposal when it is discussed in the civic body's meeting to be held on Wednesday."We are in fact also proposing to include around 600 B category employees who also worked hard during the Games," he said.
The financial suggestion of the project is likely to be around Rs 2.75 crore which will be paid from the civic body's own funds. "This is not the first time it is happening. When the NDMC headquarters was inaugurated in 1983, the employees were given one week's salary as a reward," said a senior NDMC official. The 'C' and 'D' category employees consist of security guards, clerks, gardeners and cleaners who kept the New Delhi area clean during the Games.
"Common wealth Games 2010, an international multi-sports occasion connecting athletes from Commonwealth countries, have been organized recently during the month of October and some of the events were organized in NDMC area which was also the main point of attraction during the Games," reads the item on the meeting schedule which will be approved by the council members on Wednesday. Once the suggestion is accepted, the money will be sanctioned by end of December. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had also planned to issue letters of appreciation to its staffs for working hard for the Games.
