2010 Commonwealth Games, Shooting

Shooting is an optional sporting event of Commonwealth Games. This game was introduced in the 1966 Commonwealth Games, held in Kingston in Jamaica. 1970 Commonwealth Games, held in Edinburgh did not see the inclusion of shooting. This most eagerly waited event is included in 17 programs of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, scheduled to begin from 3rd October in Delhi.

In the Commonwealth Games, shooting includes mainly five sections, Shotgun, Rifle, Airgun, Pistol and Small-bore rifle and Full-bore rifle. While Shotgun includes shooting of clay discs, pistols and air rifles are fired from indoor range distance of 10 m and small-bore or .22 calibre includes firing from a distance of 50 m whether by kneeling or standing. On the other hand, full-bore rifles which are generally 7.62 calibre, participants need to fire from different ranges which go up to 1000 yards and pistol shooting includes firing from a distance of 25 m.

In the clay target, both men and participants compete for 12 gold medals in Skeet, Trap and Double Trap section. Participants that include both men and women fight for 14 gold medals in pistol firing. The participants fight for 12 gold medals in small bore rifle, full-bore firing and airgun.

Elite athletes from different Commonwealth countries make a perfect display of accuracy, skill, speed and concentration in this event. Shooting program of the Commonwealth Games follows the rules and regulations of the International Shooting Sport Federation also known as ISSF.

Australia with 142 medals in all is in the first position of the medals tally chart of shooting. The medals include 58 gold medals, 49 silver medals and 35 bronze medals. England is in the second position with 135 medals in all that includes 37 gold medals, 50 silver medals and 48 bronze medals. In the third position is the South American country, Canada, which has won 110 medals in all that includes 39 gold medals, 36 silver medals and 35 bronze medals. 2006 Commonwealth Games saw India in the first place of the medals tally chart of shooting with 27 medals in all that included 16 gold medals, 7 silver medals and 4 bronze medals.

The venue for 2010 Commonwealth Games is Dr. K.S. Shooting Range. While male athletes will be competing for 69 medals in all, women participants will be competing for 39 medals.

The Clay Target event will be held from 6th to 13th October. Men will be competing in the following segments:

Full Bore shooting will be held from 9th to 13th October in CRPF Campus. Participants will be competing for yards range of 300, 500, 600, 900 and 1,000.

2010 Commonwealth Games, Cycling

Cycling is one among the various optional sport events that take place at the Commonwealth games. The event is meant for both men as well as women. It made its debut at the 1934 Commonwealth Games organized in London. Since then it has been a part of all the Commonwealth Games. In 1934 while the number of participating nations in cycling was just 7, in 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, the number increased significantly with 37 countries participating in it.
Cycling will feature at the upcoming Commonwealth games, 2010 to be held in Delhi and also in the 2014 commonwealth Games. Among the three disciplines of cycling, namely, road, track and mountain bike, there is the choice to include either any or all of them.

Track Cycling:-

Competition in the track cycling event will be according to the rules of UCI i.e. the International Cycling Union. The events will take place from 5th to 8th October, 2010. The list of events in this category is as below.

The events in this category are as follows.

Apart from this "para-cycling" is a track "para-sport" which is optional and meant for the disabled athletes.

3 players per event are supposed to participate except for the "Mass Start Road Race", "Road Time Trial" and "Team Pursuit" where 6, 3 and 4 competitors respectively are allowed to participate. 10 gold medals, 10 silver medals and 10 bronze medals will be at stake for the cycling event in men's category while in the same event the women will fight for 8 gold, silver and bronze medals each. I.G. Sports Complex, Delhi will host the cycling event at the Commonwealth Games, 2010.

2010 Commonwealth Games, Aquatics

The prestigious international event i.e. the Commonwealth Games happens every 4 years where nations from all over the world participate. 31 sports and 7 "Para- sports" are played at the Games, in total. Commonwealth Games Federation has approved these sports, which has been further divided into 3 kinds. These are the Core sports, Recognized sports and Optional sports.
Among the 17 disciplines of sports that have been planned to be played at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, one is Aquatics. Aquatics have been taking place in Commonwealth Games, since a long time. At the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the aquatics are scheduled to be held from 4th to 13th October at the "Swimming Pool Complex" of the "Talkatora Gardens" in Delhi. The discipline of aquatics has been further sub-divided into the following categories.

Synchronized Swimming

There are in total 56 set of medals in the discipline of aquatics that will be competed for at the 2010 Games. 68 players can be sent in total by the Commonwealth Games Associations to compete for the aquatic event.

Swimming
Swimming is a core sport. There will be 44 swimming events that will take place at 2010 Commonwealth Games from 4th to 9th October. 3 swimmers at the maximum can participate in the individual swimming event whereas 1 team can take part in the relays.
Relays: 4X100 m freestyle, 4X200 m freestyle, 4X100 m medley
Individual medley: 200 m, 400 m
Butterfly: 50 m, 100 m, 200 m

Breaststroke: 50 m, 100 m, 200 m

Diving
Diving comes under optional sport. There will be 10 diving events that will be held at the 2010 Commonwealth Games from 10th to 13th October for men as well as women. 3 divers can enter in a particular event while two pairs of players can participate in the synchronized events

Synchronized Swimming

Synchronized Swimming comes under optional sport. There will be 2 events in synchronized swimming that will take place on 6th and 7th October, 2010. The events will be both duet and solo and will be meant only for women. 3 swimmers can participate in solo synchronized swimming event and one pair of swimmers can participate in duet synchronized swimming event.
The various training events that will be used for the purpose of aquatic events are Games Village, MDC National Stadium Complex, Yamuna Sports Complex and Siri Fort Sports Complex.

C'wealth Games exhibition train arriving on July 14

The Commonwealth Games special exhibition train, which was flagged off by railway minister Mamata Banerjee on June 24 from Delhi Safdarjung station, is reaching Patna Junction on Wednesday.

It will be stabled on platform No. 9 at Patna Junction till Thursday to facilitate people to have a close look inside this specially designed Commonwealth Games train.

According to divisional railway manager (DRM), Danapur, Gyan Prakash Srivastava, the objective behind running this special train is to create awareness among common people about the importance of the Games which is being held in New Delhi from October 3 to 14 this year. The train has been conceived on the pattern of Sanskriti Express. Entry to it will be completely free for the viewers during these two days, the DRM said.

According to Danapur PRO Ranjit Kumar Singh, the train gives a vivid depiction of the Games to be held in New Delhi, its schedule and venues in detail.

The train has 11 coaches of which five have been allocated to the Railway Sports Promotion Board to showcase the history of the Games. The PRO said that the highlight of the special train is that it depicts the history of the Games beginning way back in 1930 at Hamilton in Canada. How this particular games became popular among Commonwealth countries has been beautifully depicted in this exhibition train. Besides, the railways has tastefully decorated these coaches with unique colours, he said. According to the PRO, each coach has special features. The coach-1 depicts the history of the Games right from its beginning to the recent time. Interestingly, the Games was held under the nomenclature of British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1954. However, it became British Commonwealth Games in 1970. It was later known as Commonwealth Games since 1978 onwards reflecting equality of all member nations. Known as Friendly Games too, the Games is held among a family of nations sharing common history and language (English), he said. The Games' mascot is Shera this year as it is being held in New Delhi. The Queen's Baton has been on display in this special train keeping in mind the fact that its journey started from Buckingham Palace on October 29, 2009. The Games events have been showcased in the coach-2 where dummy models of stadium will be on display to give an idea to viewers about arrangements of the Games. The coach-3 depicts all those events which have been included for the first time in the 19th Commonwealth Games. According to the PRO, the coach-4 has been dedicated to the outstanding sportspersons of the country. Their portraits and achievements have been put on display in the coach. The coach-5 showcases talented sportspersons of the Indian Railways who represented the country at the national and international level and won medals for the country. This coach highlights awards, prizes and medals won by the railway sportspersons for the country, he said, adding six other coaches highlights achievements of the Information Technology (IT) department.
