Delhi is all set to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the popular global sports event. It takes place every 4 years where nations from all across the globe participate. Quite a large number of sport events are organized at the Games. There are 31 sports and 7 "Para - sports" events at the commonwealth Games which can be classified into 17 disciplines. The diverse sports of the Games can be categorized into Core sports, Recognized sports and Optional sports.
Boxing is one among the popular games that are played at the Commonwealth Games. Among the very few games that have made its appearance in all the Commonwealth Games, boxing is one of them. It is a "core sport" and is meant only for men. Back at 1930s Commonwealth Games, boxing started with just 5 nations participating in it. However, in 2006 Commonwealth Games the number of nations has risen to 46. Boxing will also make its appearance at the 2010 Commonwealth Games at Delhi. All the boxing events will follow the rules set by the "International Amateur Boxing Association" (AIBA). The sport will be played maintaining the knockout format whereby the winner from each bout will proceed to the following round. Gold medal bouts, semi finals and quarter finals will happen in the last 4 days of the championship. Players who would loose in the semi finals will be awarded the bronze medals. The venue for the boxing competition is the Talkatora Indoor Stadium, Delhi whereas the training venue is Delhi University 4 Rings. Boxing was also one of the sports at the Commonwealth Youth Games held in Bendigo and Pune in the years 2004 and 2008 respectively, and will again feature in the 2011 Isle of Man championship.
