New Zealand first team to win four successive Gold medals

New Zealand beat Australia 24-17 in the final of the Rugby Sevens at Delhi 2010 today. The Kiwis are the first team to win four consecutive Gold medals in a group sport event at the Common wealth Games. The Australian Men’s Hockey team can also get this feat if they beat New Zealand on Thursday in the final.

New Zealand remains winning in all of its 21 Rugby Sevens matches across all four Commonwealth Games the sport has been played in since being was introduced at Kuala Lumpur in 1998. Liam Messame (NZL) and Lote Raikabula (NZL) won their second Gold medal. Amasio valance (NZL) is still the only person to have won three Gold medals in Rugby Sevens at the Commonwealth Games.

Two chip-and-chase tries in the second half secured South Africa the Rugby Sevens Bronze medal with a 17-14 victory over England at Delhi University on Tuesday. A well-placed kick to the corner from Renfred Dazel (RSA) saw Bernado Botha (RSA) cross the try line within a minute of the start to claim South Africa's first points against England.
