Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games Behind Schedule

Zee News reports the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) is worried that several new venues for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games are falling behind schedule.CGF President Michael Fennel said, "we are concerned that some of the construction deadlines will not be met. But there is still time and if the new deadlines are met, that's fine".Because of construction delays there have been cancellations of several international events that also serve as trial runs for venues being used at the October 2010 Games. The Commonwealth shooting and boxing championships were postponed, and the world badminton championships were moved to the southern Indian city of Hyderabad.Suresh Kalmadi, head of the organizing committee, said that all venues, except the velodrome and rugby sevens arena, would be completed by December."Many deadlines have been met and efforts are in hand to further enhance the efficiency in meeting laid down deadlines", he said in a statement.

Alan Hubbard: Commonwealth Games needs a radical makeover to survive and prosper

Have the Commonwealth Games passed their sell-by date? The Indian Government are deeply unhappy at the latest withdrawals from this year’s event in New Delhi, and understandably so.

The cast of star competitors is beginning to look like a litany of absentees, with England’s track queen Victoria Pendleton the latest among the escalating array of deserters.

She joins Scottish pedalling pal Sir Chris Hoy and assorted members of sports glitterati including athltetics’ principal boy Usain Bolt, England’s leading lady Jessica Ennis and Jamaicans Shelly-Ann Fraser (announced before her positive drugs test) and Veronica Campbell-Brown, plus Beth Tweddle, Daniel Keating and Louis Smith among England’s leading gymnasts in declaring that the Commonwealth Games are not in their 2010 diary. As insidethegames reported earlier this week, India’s Sports Minister is angry at the raft of personalities whose names look like making Delhi a star-free zone.

"This is not good at all," says M S Gill. "Star athletes have drifted away from the Games….they do not seem to think they are important any more."

Sadly, his words have the ring of truth. As the years pass, these Games cease to have sufficient status to remain a major attraction for sport’s A-listers.

It used to the fear of Delhi belly that caused many sports folk to shudder at the prospect of a visit to the sub-Continent. Now it is overcrowded schedules, nail-nibbling concerns over security and the lack of relevance of the India’s Games to the commercial market that causes such a reluctance to travel there.

The Commonwealth Games have become devalued, just as the Commonwealth title has in boxing and a number of other sports. I do not say this lightly, having attended every Games since 1966 and enjoyed all of them. They are not labelled the Friendly Games for nothing. By and large they have been a joy to witness and report.

They may not have the cachet of the Olympics, nor would you expect them to have as by comparison they are a village fete. This is not to disparage them but to appreciate them for what they are - or rather, were.

The ‘Friendly Games’ now exist uneasily in a target-obsessed era when friendlies in sport have become meaningless. There is now serious rivalry from the African Games, Asian Games, the Mediterranean Games, the Youth Olympics and an increasing number of individual sport world and European Championships which seem to coincide and brings fixture congestion in the same year, and take priority as far as competitors are concerned.

A Commonwealth Games medal is a decent little trinket to hang around the neck but it does not possess the market value of an Olympic or World Championships one. That seems a prime reason why so many of sport’s superstars can’t be bothered to turn up.

The problem with the Commonwealth Games is that, rather like the Commonwealth itself, they have become something of an anachronism. Hard as they have tried, that still cannot shake off the remaining vestiges of colonialism lingering from the days from inception in 1930 they first were the British Empire Games, then the British Empire and Commonwealth Games (1954), the British Commonwealth Games (1970) and finally the Commonwealth Games in 1978.

Subsequently there have been some strong arguments as to whether or not we actually need a Commonwealth any more, and if this should be was to be the case why need a Commonwealth Games?

Personally I hope they continue for some years to come. I would be sad to see them redundant but I fear they are becoming so in terms of all co-existing with the escalating major porting competitions now going on around the world.

Sport’s international calendar is incredibly congested. One can appreciate why Scotland’s Chris Hoy (pictured), for instance, has rejected Delhi in favour of preparing to his own satisfaction for both the upcoming European Championships and the Olympics (though whether he would have risked getting seriously clubbed about the head by a million claymores had this October’s ComGames been in Glasgow instead of Delhi is open to conjecture).

"The Olympics has to take precedence over everything," says Hoy, a double Commonwealth Games gold medalist. "I could turn up at the Commonwealth Games but it would hamper my preparation for the European Championships, a qualifying event for 2012. And I wouldn't be at a hundred per cent fitness-wise."

Pendleton says the same and you can bet there will be numerous more drop outs within the nest couple of months to cause Mr Gill more angst.

Fair enough I suppose. But with Delhi’s Games fast becoming the great Indian take-away inn terms of talent, you wonder how many Asian nations may take reprisals at Glasgow in 2014.

I suspect that, in any case, the way international sport will burgeon over the next four years the dear old Commonwealth Games will become even less magnet for the superstars. Perhaps it is time to start revamping with a new format, perhaps even a new title for the quadrennial sportsfest. Time, perhaps scale them down in these harsh dark economic times and give the shop window to some of those disciplines which never get a look-in at the Olympics: Things like water skii-ing, darts, snooker and acrobatic gymnastics (all of which would bring even more glory to our Home Nations).

They also have which have a greater televisual appeal than some already in the traditional Games schedule. Time, perhaps, to celebrate a common wealth of games rather than a Commonwealth Games.

Top 5 restaurants to visit in Delhi during Common wealth games event

Delhi is famous for it's rich North Indian cuisine and its restaurants have come up with some creative ways of presenting it. There are outstanding places to eat in Delhi to suit all budgets, from fine dining to cheap local eateries. Check out an interesting review done by indiamarks

Here's the Top 5 Best Restaurants in New Delhi:

1) Bukhara

In the 20-plus years since this restaurant opened its doors, it has become legendary. The cuisine is traditional "Northwestern Frontier" Indian, which is a style that focuses on meats cooked in a clay oven called a tandoor. Order any item on the menu and you can't go wrong. Bukhara has a string of awards to its name, including being voted "Best Indian Restaurant in the World" and "Best Restaurant in Asia" by the Restaurant Magazine in the UK. It's known for its rustic atmosphere, unforgettable kababs, and huge family size naan bread. Be sure to make a reservation.

2) Chor Bizarre

The name of this restaurant means "thieves' market," and the mish-mash of nostalgic décor and furnishings echoes the sentiment. You might dine on an old sewing table or sit in mismatched chairs. The salad bar used to be a 50s vintage Fiat. Don't let the fun decorations distract you from your wonderful meal. The menu features the best cuisine from India's northern Kashmir region and is good value for money. This style of cooking tends to be a bit milder than much of Indian cooking. Try the lamb meatballs flavored with cardamom or the mutton stewed in yogurt, cardamom and anise. Several sampler platters are available if you can't decide on just one entrée.

3) Karim's

Established in 1913, Karim's is something of a Delhi institution. It serves robust Mughal food in rudimentary but clean surroundings off a courtyard that is close behind Jama Masjid in Old Delhi. The decor of this restaurant is nothing much to look at, but the food more than makes up for it. Delhi-ites and visitors in the know come here for the mutton. The meat is available in a variety of sweet or savory gravies. Other delicious meals include the lamb stuffed with chicken, rice, eggs and fruit, and the fresh, hot curries. No matter what you order, be sure to get some homemade bread on the side. No credit cards. Casual attire.

4) Masala Art

Masala Art is a classy and modern restaurant that specializes in traditional cuisines from northern India, with a contemporary twist. Its innovative menu and chef's cooking displays are sure to get the taste buds interested. You'll also find an impressive and reasonably priced wine list, with over 400 varieties on offer.

5) Punjabi By Nature

The multi-level Punjabi By Nature is a hip and elegant place, with waiters clad in traditional Punjabi attire. It's known for its unique creation of vodka gol gappas -- fried crispy shells filled with flavored vodka and other spices. The food is excellent, servings are generous, and the atmosphere warm and inviting. There's also a bar on the upper floor. You can combine dining with shopping, as the restaurant is located in an enticing and stylish shopping complex.

Al-Qaeda threat to Commonwealth Games, IPL and hockey World Cup

The Commonwealth Games, the Indian Premier League and the hockey World Cup were put on alert for direct attacks from al-Qaeda after the terrorist organisation's Pakistani arm made specific threats against the events.

In a rare example of a terrorist group using specific threats against sporting events to generate propaganda the 313 Brigade, an affiliate of al-Qaeda, warned that athletes and spectators attending the events in India would face "consequences". The IPL and hockey World Cup take place next month, with the Commonwealth Games scheduled for October in Delhi. In a message issued following a bomb attack on the Indian city of Pune at the weekend, Ilyas Kashmiri, the head of 313 Brigade, was quoted by Asian Times Online as saying: "We warn the international community not to send their people to the 2010 Hockey World Cup, IPL and Commonwealth Games. Nor should their people visit India – if they do, they will be responsible for the consequences."

Lalit Modi, the chairman of the IPL, last night insisted the league, which begins on March 12, would go ahead. "We are working with the Indian government on a day-to-day basis," he said. "Security is going to be very, very tight and we have discussed every eventuality." Last year the IPL was shifted out of India due to security concerns and Modi said, "we do have a back-up plan". David Faulkner, the England Hockey performance director, expects full details of security arrangements for the World Cup to be made clear by the weekend. Faulkner is waiting for the International Hockey Federation to deliver detailed plans for security at the team hotel and transportation during the tournament, which starts in New Delhi on Feb 28.

He said: "Hopefully by the weekend we will have all the necessary details and planning to hand. We've had a positive communication from the FIH and there is a briefing taking place later this week which the British High Commission is managing on our behalf." The direct threat will add to uncertainty surrounding the Delhi Commonwealth Games, which will be the largest sporting event held in the subcontinent.

Some of the world's leading athletes have already indicated they will not compete citing scheduling issues, and last year The Daily Telegraph disclosed grave reservations about security at the event. Commonwealth Games Federation chief Mike Hooper dismissed suggestions the competition should be moved to another country. "The Games will not be shifted, make no mistake, the Games in 2010 will be in Delhi, there is no Plan B," he told the Sydney Morning Herald. "From a planning and security point of view, there is nothing to my knowledge that would suggest that security planning for the Games is not on track.
The commitment is unwavering from the Indian government to deliver a safe and secure Games." Last night security experts retained by Commonwealth Games England were examining the threat. "We take the security of the English team very seriously indeed, and are working closely with a number of experts and advisers in this area," said a spokeswoman. "Any threat will be evaluated and analysed to ensure the safety of our athletes.
As things stand we have been assured it will be safe to compete and as such we intend to travel to the Games in October. We will continue to take advice and evaluate intelligence throughout the period approaching the Games." The Foreign Office said it was aware of the 313 Brigade statement, and that its advice to travellers was constantly under review. "We are monitoring developments in India closely. Our travel advice already makes clear reference to terrorism and security issues in India generally.
"We are in regular contact with UK sporting bodies ahead of events such as the Commonwealth Games in India. We will continue to work closely with the Indian authorities who are doing everything they can to ensure the safety, security and success of these forthcoming sporting events."

Commonwealth construction debris behind water logging on roads: Delhi CM

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday blamed the debris of the ongoing construction work for the Commonwealth Games for causing water logging on the roads in the national capital during the monsoon rains.

She said this while going around the sites for the mega even of Commonwealth Games and speaking to the media persons.

The Commonwealth Games 2010 to be held from October 3 to 14 will be India's biggest sporting event since the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi.

"It is true that there is a lot of debris lying around and yesterday's rains were very unusual. Even today the clouds are pretty dark; it is possible that it might rain today. So we are preparing ourselves to the best to counter that," said Dikshit.

She reviewed a couple of the venues of the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

Further, she mentioned that the debris would be cleared before 10th August, the stipulated time.

"We had informed that all the debris would be cleared before 10th August. Let the time come," Dikshit added.

Vehicular traffic in most of the main thoroughfares of New Delhi was badly affected due to waterlogged roads on when it rained for merely 90 minutes on Monday.

The cloud burst in the evening measured 51.4 mm while the thunderstorm uprooted several trees, resulting in endless traffic snarls.

People were seen wading thorough in knee-deep water while traffic crawled at snail speed causing umpteen problems to commuters.

At least 11 people, including two women and three children, were killed in rain-related incidents on Monday.

PSUs asked to chip in as sponsors for Commonwealth Games

The government has asked central PSUs to sponsor the Commonwealth Games even as state-owned firms, including the Railways, have already
committed Rs 200 crore for a "good cause".

While the Indian Railways has made a provision of Rs 100 crore, state-owned NTPC and Central Bank of India have contributed Rs 50 crore each, Secretary in the Department of Public Enterprises Bhaskar Chatterjee said.

With the Games struggling to get sponsorships, Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has asked top profit making PSUs the Maharatnas and Navratnas to contribute for a "good cause".

State-owned Air India, the official carrier of the Games, has chipped in with tickets for officials and players as part of its contribution to the event. Besides, it has also offered to provide two chartered flights for the Games, beginning October 3.

The airline's contribution in kind, tickets and chartered flights, is estimated to be Rs 30 crore in money terms, an official said.

"The Commonwealth Games should be supported as far as possible. We are trying to support the Games," he said, adding, however that the contributions by PSUs were "voluntary".

The support by PSUs would be counted to judge their annual performance targets, Chatterjee said.

Letters to this effect were sent by the DPE last month. The CWG was given a revised budget of Rs 1,620 crore by the Central government as a loan on an understanding that the organising committee would repay the amount after it realises it through sponsorships and sale of TV rights.

The sale of TV broadcasting rights may bring in Rs 250 crore.

"We are expecting Rs 250 crores (from TV rights)," CWG Organising Committee spokesman Lalit Bhanot said. While he did not give the sponsorship amount confirmed so far, he said "ours is a revenue neutral budget and we will try to get it."

From the private sector, Hero Honda has been listed as sponsors while Coca Cola is a co-sponsor.

Noida-based Amity University would be training 30,000 volunteers and 2,500 field staff. The university spokesperson pegged the cost at Rs 15 crore.

C'wealth Games exhibition train arriving on July 14

The Commonwealth Games special exhibition train, which was flagged off by railway minister Mamata Banerjee on June 24 from Delhi Safdarjung station, is reaching Patna Junction on Wednesday.
It will be stabled on platform No. 9 at Patna Junction till Thursday to facilitate people to have a close look inside this specially designed Commonwealth Games train.
According to divisional railway manager (DRM), Danapur, Gyan Prakash Srivastava, the objective behind running this special train is to create awareness among common people about the importance of the Games which is being held in New Delhi from October 3 to 14 this year. The train has been conceived on the pattern of Sanskriti Express. Entry to it will be completely free for the viewers during these two days, the DRM said.
According to Danapur PRO Ranjit Kumar Singh, the train gives a vivid depiction of the Games to be held in New Delhi, its schedule and venues in detail.
The train has 11 coaches of which five have been allocated to the Railway Sports Promotion Board to showcase the history of the Games. The PRO said that the highlight of the special train is that it depicts the history of the Games beginning way back in 1930 at Hamilton in Canada. How this particular games became popular among Commonwealth countries has been beautifully depicted in this exhibition train. Besides, the railways has tastefully decorated these coaches with unique colours, he said. According to the PRO, each coach has special features. The coach-1 depicts the history of the Games right from its beginning to the recent time. Interestingly, the Games was held under the nomenclature of British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1954. However, it became British Commonwealth Games in 1970. It was later known as Commonwealth Games since 1978 onwards reflecting equality of all member nations. Known as Friendly Games too, the Games is held among a family of nations sharing common history and language (English), he said. The Games' mascot is Shera this year as it is being held in New Delhi. The Queen's Baton has been on display in this special train keeping in mind the fact that its journey started from Buckingham Palace on October 29, 2009. The Games events have been showcased in the coach-2 where dummy models of stadium will be on display to give an idea to viewers about arrangements of the Games. The coach-3 depicts all those events which have been included for the first time in the 19th Commonwealth Games. According to the PRO, the coach-4 has been dedicated to the outstanding sportspersons of the country. Their portraits and achievements have been put on display in the coach. The coach-5 showcases talented sportspersons of the Indian Railways who represented the country at the national and international level and won medals for the country. This coach highlights awards, prizes and medals won by the railway sportspersons for the country, he said, adding six other coaches highlights achievements of the Information Technology (IT) department.

Slow and unsteady facelift for Commonwealth Games 2010

Days after Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit took her team to task for lagging behind in executing Commonwealth Games projects, Mail Today finds that most stretches are lying dug up and unfinished masonry littered all over in the name of streetscaping
The entrails ripped out of several of the Capital's sidewalks - particularly those located around Commonwealth Games venues - give the lie to the civic agencies' claims that streetscaping work on 23 roads is almost 90 per cent complete.
That these eyesores have led Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit to serve a stiff August 31 ultimatum for completion of CWG projects bears further testimony to the beautification venture making excruciatingly slow progress.
The fact is that just around 50 per cent work has been finished on almost all roads. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi's ( MCD's) July 15 streetscaping deadline for stretches such as Bhishma Pitamah Marg and Lodhi Road (abutting Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium), Maharishi Valmiki Marg (approach road to Thyagaraj Stadium) and Chaudhary Dalip Singh Marg (leading to Siri Fort Sports Complex) is, therefore, as good as missed.
The Public Works Department (PWD) hasn't fared much better on the pavements of Marginal Bund Road - the stretch leading to the Games Village near Akshardham Temple.
With a substantial portion of the work remaining in all these areas and the monsoon bottleneck looming, the worry now is whether the streetscaping projects will at all be ready in time for the sporting extravaganza which is less than 90 days away.
MCD has received Rs 100 crore from the Delhi government for 2010 Games streetscaping work
This stretch leads to the Akshardham Temple and the CWG Village in East Delhi. Four days after being pulled up by the Delhi government for the tardy progress of work here, the PWD hasn't yet got cracking.
A large portion of the streetscaping work lies incomplete on this road. But the civic agency has not bothered to deploy more labourers to expedite the project, which includes paving and greening of sidewalks.
The large amount of construction material on the road shows the work may take another month to finish. "A lot of stone work is left. We need to lay the tiles and intersperse them with granite slabs, which will take at least a month," a labourer said.
While urban development minister A. K. Walia and transport minister Arvinder Singh Lovely have been assured by the PWD that work will be wrapped up soon, the actual situation is grim.
At an inspection last week, Walia had said the PWD must speed up.
"I am dissatisfied with the progress of upgrade of roads leading to the Village and have instructed officials to accelerate," Walia had said. The minister was particularly upset with work on a flyover near the Village.
